John W. Mendel is senior vice president, automobile operations of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., responsible for Product Planning, Advertising, Marketing, Public Relations and Distribution for both Honda and Acura Automobile Divisions. Prior to joining American Honda in December 2004, Mendel served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Mazda North American Operations. Mendel began his career with Ford Motor Co., U.S. operations in 1976 and held numerous sales and marketing positions within Lincoln Mercury and Ford Customer Service. He was appointed major markets/dealer advertising manager in 1990, and regional operations manager in Chicago in 1992. Mendel served as regional manager for Ford's San Francisco and Los Angeles operations from 1993 through 1998. He served as director of marketing with Ford of Britain from 1999 to 2002.

The Teutonic battle for automotive dominance turned for BMW last year, with BMW selling 1.209 million cars versus 1.201 million for Mercedes. This past February, BMW extended its lead with a 7% increase in sales, compared to a precipitous 11.6 percent decline for Mercedes. To say Mercedes needs a hit is like saying the 1970s band Supertramp needs a hit, except that Supertramp is more relevant to the marketplace.

Upon introduction, the 4X2 Convenience 4.0L is equipped with a standard 4.0-liter, V6, 210-horsepower, flexible fuel engine that achieves 16-mpg in the city and 21-mpg on the highway. The AWD Premier 4.6L is equipped with a standard 4.6-liter, V8, 239-horsepower engine that achieves 14-mpg in the city and 18-mpg on the highway. The IS will be arriving in showrooms across the country later this year, completely redesigned from the ground up. Available in two V6 models, the IS 250 is equipped with a 2.5-liter engine, while the IS 350 is powered by a 3.5-liter engine. The rear-wheel-drive sports sedan is also the second car after the GS to feature the new Lexus design language: L-Finesse.
Embracing the aesthetic principles of simplicity and elegance, the L-Finesse philosophy is quite evident throughout the IS. Outside, the muscular stance is complemented by sweeping contemporary lines. Inside the sporty, well-appointed cabin, the driver will find an engine start button, and passengers will enjoy the increased rear legroom.

We first saw this little scissor-winged three-seater at the Michelin Bibendum Challenge last October in Shanghai, where Volvo pitted the vehicle's electric powertrain technology against a host of whacked-out future-tech stuff. With powertrain bits developed by AC Propulsion, the 3CC scored well against its diesel and various hybrid competition.
